Emetophobia is a type of fear. The word comes from the Greek 'emesis' (vomiting), whilst the suffix -phobia means an illogical, incapacitating anxiety about an object or situation. Someone who has this fear is called an emetophobe, which means that they have anxieties over being exposed to vomit, or witnessing somebody vomit, even on a photo or on TV. Usually the fear of vomit itself is subdued to the extended, more general fear of anything that could be somehow related to vomit - for example, even being in a room where someone could have vomited, or the general fear of people who are sick. Many emetophobes cannot eat out, and won't eat food where they haven't had any control over the cooking process.

Emetophobics are usually people that developed this as a result of experiencing severe bouts of vomiting as young children, or maybe just witnessing somebody vomiting regularly. This might have been due to illness or pregnancy in their mother. Or if the child had a tendency for self-stimulated vomiting that leads to an increase risk. Another factor that is known to lead to phobia in some cases is going through gastrointestinal surgery. And sometimes another underlying mental health condition might be the cause. In one specific study carried out by Dr. Angela L. Davidson, it was concluded that individuals with emetophobia have a greater than average level of perceived internal control over their own everyday lives - this is called an internal locus of control. The locus of control simply stated shows where an individual thinks that control comes from. If the locus of control is internal, this means that the person thinks they have control over their own actions in a situation, and an outside, external LOC implies that they believe they have no control over their life and it is determined by outside factors.
