While named Generation Y and the "echo boomers" much of this age group prefers to be recognized as the name that they gave to themselves: the millennial generation. This class is usually defined as those born from around 1980 until the end of the millennium. They grow up in the new 21st century and this is how they take their name. Many in the millennial generation also want to differentiate themselves evidently from Generation X.

The millennial generation is often named the echo boomers as they are also the result of a baby boom. A college degree is no more a guarantee of a quick hire and a decent paying position and underemployment and unemployment is a grave concern for this demographic.
