Many local people felt the merger was a "shotgun marriage" forced on them by the Ontario provincial government.

Today Waterloo Region is among the most vibrant and diverse areas in Canada because it has some of the best farm land in Canada, two highly regarded Universities, a strong financial industry, diversified industrial production and a flourishing high tech sector centered around Research in Motion and numerous spinoff businesses from the region's two univeristies.
